The Other—the true Other—is not the person we choose to invite to our home (often in the hope of being invited in turn) but the person who emerges before us without being chosen, the person who simply comes by chance, for “hospitality is a gift, it is a crossing of paths”. The Other is the person standing in front of us as a presence that asks to be welcome in its irreducible otherness, irrespective of the ethnicity, the faith, the culture she belong to. The Other is a human being and this should be enough for us to welcome her. In other words, why accept the gift of hospitality? Because we are human, and so we can humanize our humanity. Each one of us is a guest of humankind inasmuch as he or she has been born. Consequently, hospitality is a response to that deep-seated vocation of man—achieving one’s humanity by welcoming the humanity of the other.

Enzo Bianchi is the founder of the ecumenical Bose monastic community. He taught Biblical Theology at the Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele in Milan and was awarded a honoris causa degree in Political Science from the University of Turin and in Gastronomic Science from the University of Pollenzo. He collaborates with newspapers and publications including La Stampa, la Repubblica, Avvenire and Jesus. He participated at the Synods discussing The Word of God (2008) and New Evangelisation (2012). Pope Francis appointed him as a member of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, and as a “listener” on the Bishops’ Synod on Young People, the Faith and Vocational Discernment (2018).
