Enrico Pieranunzi: Duke’s Dream

Darius Milhaud: Scaramouche

Astor Piazzolla: Fuga y misterio, Milonga del Angel, La muerte del Angel

Two extraordinary pianists come together for a programme of 20th century music, which was very much influenced by the theme of migration, intended both as the physical movement of composers and musicians from one country to another, and the mental and aesthetic shift towards ‘other’ cultures. This theme is perfectly embodied by the artistry of George Gershwin and Astor Piazzolla. Gershwin, an American of Russian-Jewish descent, fell in love with European music and embarked on a double ‘aesthetic migration’, from the US to Europe and vice versa, creating an original blend of classical music and jazz. Piazzolla was an Argentinean of Italian origin who studied in Paris and translated the anguish of migration into a style of tango so revolutionary that it spawned one of the most profound and intense musical languages of our time.

Bruno Canino studied piano and composition at the Milan Conservatory, where he has taught for 24 years. A soloist and chamber pianist, he has played the leading concert halls and festivals across the globe. Under conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Muti and Chailly Berio, he has played with the most eminent orchestras in the world. An expert in contemporary music, Canino has worked with, among others, Pierre Boulez, Karlheinz Stockhausen and Luigi Nono, often being the first person to perform their compositions.
