Aren’t ‘body’ and ‘spirituality’ two opposite notions? Is it not contradictory to discuss the body, religion and spirituality together? Spirituality is traditionally an experience of the spirit whereas the boy is material, hence too limited to rise to the sublime heights of the religious. Starting from the history and doctrine of Christianity, Stefanie Knauss will show how we can find, in the religion of in-carn-ation, two different views of the body that interact in a complex way: the body is viewed as something that needs to be overcome in order to achieve salvation, as well as the very place of man’s encounter with God. In turn, Vito Mancuso will introduce the idea that the very notions of soul and spirit are not really conceivable without the body.
