“I write poetry because my genes and chromosomes fall in love with young men, not young women.” With a reckless, carefree verse, the poet Allen Ginsberg upended centuries of controversy over the role nature and culture play in determining our lives. But poets follow mysterious reasoning. While other people ask themselves at some point: is it nature or nurture? In other words, is sexual orientation the result of education and social interactions? Does it spring from unusual fundamental relationships? Is it the result of a traumatic experience? Or is it purely a matter of genes and hormones? While these questions are inevitable, they are mistaken because they are based on two preconceptions. That we are all born as tabulae rasae, ready to be moulded by external factors: education, environment and experiences. Or, that we are born with specific tastes, desires and behaviour already pre-programmed. The error lies in the binary approach: nature or culture, internal or external, black or white. Life is made of shaded nuances - and not all of them grey, we hope.
