“Community” is a word that seems to come from the past, evocating warmth, intimacy, knowledge and the ability to coexist. But it is not easy to build a community, it requires a continual willingness to live together, daily negotiation with other people, keeping relationships alive. A community is a common project one has to believe in so it will survive. In fact, external influences or internal fractures can destabilise the connections between people, causing the community’s horizons to dim or even disappear into the ether. This is why our sense of belonging is diminished and we find ourselves orphans of the community. Fear, rage and selfishness can also restrict the boundaries of Us to the point of excluding the Others, awakening new or old racisms. And this is when they build those walls that deny us any horizon and cast their shadows over us, cooling the warmth the community knew how to provide.
